The Secret Life of the American Adult

A few things that simply must be said.

1. Confession: I watch the stupid ABC Family show "Secret Life of the American Teenager." There. I said it. Now...about this week's episode: Okay, I appreciate that for the first time on television labor is actually taking an appropriate amount of time. Normally, women seem to have their babies within an hour (at most) and a few pushes (at most). Never really thought I would be able to cite ABC family with realism, but hey, a first time for everything. BUT...um, I didn't get to eat cheeseburgers when I was in labor. I went into labor around 11:00 at night, ate a light breakfast around 8:00, went to a doctor's appointment, and got sent to the hospital for observation around 10:00, at which point they let me have ice chips and juice boxes. When they admitted me at 2:00pm, the juice boxes went away and it was ice chip city until Ben made his appearance at 12:17am. 25 hours of labor, and all I got to have a was a bowl of cereal. But she gets cheeseburgers?!?!? So much for realism.

2. American Idol. Okay, quick recap of this week (select contestants only). The girls are, for the most part, fairly forgettable. Poor Lil, the best girl by far, made a bad choice. Allison is too young and, while she is has a great voice, should never be aloud to talk in front of the cameras. And why do they keep trying to force Alexis to be so dirty? Also, Megan, what is your deal with vowels? I see why she is liked, but I can't stand the way she pronounces some words. And the little twisty thing she does? Weird. Speaking of weird (which doesn't even begin to describe him)--Adam. What?!?! I feel violated. Poor Johnny Cash. His legacy is tarnished forever by that creepy, awful rendition. And on the plus side...Anoop, way to come back. Danny, Kris, Matt--how will I ever pick between you?

Random thoughts of the day

1. Cleaning up Christmas is waaaaay less fun than setting it up
2. I should have had yesterday be cleaning day

3. Dry heat + Santa Ana winds = sad, bloody-nosed, head-achy Shannon

4. January is for cold weather, not 80 degree summer weather

5. Sometimes I really like hot dogs

6. Babies produce a lot of laundry
7. I'm tired of living in a crappy apartment

8. Our honeymoon was really great...I wish we could have taken more trips together before we got pregnant and had the boy. I'm excited to take trips with Ben...but having our first romantic getaway be our last (at least until the kids are in college) is kind of lame.

9. Twilight is really stupid and I love it

10. I can't wait for the Golden Globes tonight. Celebrities (particularly Meryl Streep) + booze + acceptance speeches = funny

11. I also can't wait for 24 tonight. More specifically, I'm excited about Dave Barry's running commentary on 24.

12. I'm torn between which to watch live: the Golden Globes or 24.

13. I'm glad Ben and Emily (Clements) finally got to meet last night.

14. I don't want to go to work tomorrow. Or really ever. I want to stay at home with my kid and play with him.

15. I'm tired of going to work all day with 12-year-olds and coming home to cook, clean, and take care of my family. I like all of it...it's just a lot to fit into one day.

16. We're getting a free new couch this week. I'm really excited because it's the exact kind of couch we wanted (an L-shaped sectional), and it's usually thousands of dollars. We REALLY needed a new couch (we are the fourth owners of our current couch), but we have absolutely no money. And this one just kind of fell in our laps. Thanks Wes and Terry! Now if we could just find new homes for our current couches...

I think that's it. I've just been accumulating these random thoughts, all blog-worthy, but maybe not enough for a separate blog for each. So here they are, all jumbled together in no particular order for your reading pleasure.

And now for a gratuitous Ben moment...

You're welcome.

Ben's first potty training video

I plan to show Ben this video when he's ready to be potty trained. I'm pretty sure it will work.

Wheat Bread and Taebo Funk

So because I'm so cool, I rang in 2009 by sitting on my living room floor watching TV and putting together Ben's baby book. I know. You're so jealous. I party hard. Matt's celebrating 2009 by taking a nap, and now Ben's celebrating 2009 by screaming his head off because he's overtired. That's how we roll at the Millers' house.

This is the time when I suppose I should make some New Years resolutions. I don't usually make resolutions; I've been around long enough to know that I will continue to make the same resolutions and continue to abandon them within a few weeks (0r maybe days), because that's the American way. Also, I think it's lame to decide to change and become a better person only when it's time for a new year. I mean, shouldn't we always be resolving to be healthier, spend more time with God, and be better people? Well, we don't. Because we're people. But hey, maybe this year will be the one, right? Maybe this time I'll keep all my resolutions, and next year I can just say "this year I resolve to continue to be the awesome person I became last year." Or I can become super great this year, and then next year I can resolve to be EVEN MORE AWESOME. We'll see. But for now, let's have some goals.

Because I'm a woman and a Christian, of course I have the requisites:

1. Eat better and exercise (this baby weight is clearly not going anywhere on its own, despite the strongly worded conversations I've had with my belly and thighs)

2. Spend more quality time with God
3. Be a better wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, teacher, etc.

Now for some more personal specifics:

1. Read 25 books (The funny thing is, a few years ago I read 108 books in one year. Ha ha. Having a kid changes things.)

2. Take the CSET in history

3. Find myself (Shouldn't I have done this in college? Well, I did...but then I got married and had a kid. Now I have to figure me out again.)

4. Spend at least a couple of hours each week relaxing and not stressing out

5. Get out more and spend more time with my friends

6. Go on more hot dates with my hubby

And what have I already done to make these things happen?
1. Bought
Billy Blanks Taebo Funk. You know you're jealous.
2. Bought whole grain wheat products at the store today (if you know me and my irrational hatred of the texture of whole grain wheat products, then you know this is a big deal)
3. Got a sitter for tomorrow night for a hot date with my hubby

4. Actually contacted a couple of my friends to hang out at some point

5. Whipped out
Satanic Verses. Yep. Me and Rushdie are going to spend some time together at last.

Maybe next year I'll still be fat, isolated, and spiritually weak, and I'll go into a shame spiral some time in February because I feel like a failure. Or maybe I'll actually follow through. Let's hope for the latter...

And the Husband of the Year Award Goes to...

...Matthew Miller!!!

My super hot hubby spent the weekend playing superdad and superhusband. I was sick as all get-out (what does that even mean anyway?), and my sweet hunk of a honey came to the rescue. He watched Ben while I laid on the couch blowing my nose and reading Entertainment Weekly and New Moon (shut up--no judging). He cooked breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He made me tea. He did the laundry. This afternoon I awoke from a nap to the smell of cookies baking and the sight of my man cheerfully changing his son's diaper--which, let me tell you, is no small task. Thanks to rice cereal, every poopy diaper begets a new outfit and ten minutes of a complete babywipe sponge bath and onesie hose-down in the bathroom sink. I have learned very quickly to not get attached to any of my son's clothes.

But I digress. Thanks to Matthew the Magnificent I have been able to get loads of guilt-free rest this weekend, thus speeding my recovery, and I now feel well enough to face the week. Well, health-wise. Emotionally is a whole other story. But that's a blog for a different day. Today I am simply thankful for an incredible husband.

By the by, the above photo is in no way connected to this weekend. It's from an 80s prom night at our church a few years ago. I just thought you might want to see this amazing man in all of his glory.

Another Tissue, Please

In case you were wondering, being sick when you're a middle school teacher, wife, and mother of an infant is super lame. I actually used to not mind being sick. I mean, I hated the sniffly, achy, icky part. But I kinda liked sick days. I mean, you get to lay around on your couch or in your bed all day watching TV, reading, and napping. Sure, you don't feel good. But it's like a little mandatory break in the busyness of life.

Not so when you're a mom. When you're a mom you don't call in sick to work because you're saving up your sick days for when your kid gets sick. And for me, even if I did call in sick, I'd still be at home taking care of my sweet little boy all day (the one and only negative to having my mom watch Ben at my home).

Yuck.

On the plus side, I'm going to get pies thrown at me at lunch today. Oh wait.

The REAL plus side is this guy:

Hooray for weekends when I get to hang out with my little buddy! (And have some help from the hubby if I'm feeling icky.)
