Being a Mom

Sometimes being a mom is embarrassing. Like when your kid asks, super loudly and in front of him, if your neighbor has a baby in his belly. Or when your kid has diarrhea at the water park. Or when you pee a little every time you run, laugh, dance, or breathe.

Sometimes being a mom is fun. Like when you take your kids to the zoo and the park and the beach...you know, for them.

Sometimes it requires sacrifice. Like sleep. And food. And personal space. And your dignity.

Sometimes being a mom is frustrating. Like when your kid poops his pants at least once every couple of weeks at preschool.

Sometimes it's glamorous. Like when you're covered in spit-up and/or barf and/or poop and/or pee, and you're not really sure when you last showered. Like when you're not really sure when you last wore pants that did not have elastic.

Sometimes being a mom is scary. Like when your baby is born unable to breathe on his own. Or when you have to lay on top of him so he can get an IV at 18 months. Or when you sleep next to him in the PICU. Or when he's covered in blood. Or when you go into preterm labor. Twice.

Sometimes it's exhausting. Like when your baby has severe reflux and cries all day and all night for months. Or like when your baby doesn't sleep. Ever.

Sometimes it's very fulfilling and rewarding. Like when your kid shares for two seconds before pitching a fit. Or when he said please that one time.

Sometimes being a mom is all of those things.

But it's always always always awesome. Because it involves these guys.

This is my very first picture as a mom. Look how pretty I am! And I just gave birth! At 12:16  in the morning! After 25 hours of labor! Please, stop worshiping me. It's embarrassing.

Thank you, Benjamin and Emma, for making me a mom. It's the gig of a lifetime.
