The price: $3 for parking, $2 for the zoo [they don't take reciprocal zoo passes (passes from other zoos)]
The Journey: 3.5
We went on a weekday afternoon, so there was no traffic. The drive through the park was nice. It gets a 3.5, though, because if you went on a weekday morning or evening you'd probably sit in some hefty traffic. Also, it's not in Costa Mesa, which means I had to drive more than 10 minutes, which made it lose points. And this travel guide is, after all, mostly about me.
The Hike: n/a
We didn't have time to do the "hike." But we did walk around a little, and it was really pretty. I will try and go back to do the hike later, because it seemed really nice.
The View: 5.0
The park is gorgeous. It reminded me a lot of Central Park, but without the surrounding buildings. There were a couple of ponds/lakes, meandering pathways (paved and dirt), rolling grassy hills and plains, and loads of trees.
The Extras: 5.0
The zoo was great. It was small and there weren't very many animals, but they actually had good animals. There were bears and mules and mule-deer (???), a bald eagle, hawks, bobcats, and a great petting zoo area. There was a super cute story time area as well. Obviously it was no San Diego Zoo. But for $2 and a one year old, it was perfect. Very pretty, too. It was pretty green with numerous trees and a little waterfall at the entrance, very easy to navigate, and well-maintained. I also liked that it's a rescue zoo--all of the animals are wildlife that have been injured or can't be released into the wild.
The park itself was quite nice. We laid our blanket down under a tree by the lake for a picnic. There are several rentals, like boats and bicycles, and there is a nature center (which is only open on the weekends).
